Gevrey-Chambertin
Just south of Dijon, the village of Gevrey-Chambertin produces a variety of Grand Cru wines. Its location at the foot of the Côte-d’Or has been consistently settled for some time, with vines dating to the 1st century BC having been discovered by archaeologists; this suggests that these Roman-era vines were among the first to be planted in Burgundy. Today, the village is home to 8 of the 33 Grand Cru wines in Burgundy, noted for their aging potential of 10 to 20 years.
Clos de Vougeot
An enclosed vineyard, and the single largest vineyard with a Grand Cru designation in the Côte de Nuits, Clos de Vougeot has a long history dating back to the 12th century. Initial wine production on the property was done by Cistercian monks before the vineyard’s possession and sale to private ownership following the French Revolution. Today, Clos de Vougeot is renowned for many of its wines, which are notable for aging from dense and robust wines in its youth to a complete, elegant wine after a decade of cellar aging.
Patriarche
Located on the road of Grand Crus in the Côte de Nuit, Patriarche is one of the oldest wine companies in the region and sells numerous wines from the finest terroirs in Burgundy. Founded in the 1760s, Patriarche continues a 230 year tradition of wine excellence daily. Its cellars in Beaune covers 5 kilometers underground, lined with barrels of aging wine and bottles of numerous vintages. Their wine tasting takes place in their cellars as well, which makes for a unique ambience while sampling from their collection.
Meursault
Located in the Côte-d’Or, Meursault sits beneath a Roman fort. Today, the commune is home to some of the best white wines in Burgundy. Often described as buttery, the chardonnay produced in Meursault has an oak influence on the palette. While Meursault is labeled a Premier Cru vineyard, the wines produced here are often favorably compared to Grand Cru producers.
